If I had the money, I would give tons of dolls as gifts, but only after the person had made some specific statement about what doll exactly they want. A doll itself is such a specific and expensive thing that I'd either involve the person in the purchase or have a third party gather all the details for it to be a surprise. My fiance has discussed giving me a doll as a gift. He'd ask me which doll I'd want and I'd know it was coming.
I think they are wonderful gifts if you know well the person it is for. I wanted to give one to my bestie this christmas but couldnt afford it. However I keep the idea for next year ! I would also looove getting one, naturally, but I would like to choose it... haha. I think it's easier giving props and clothing though !
