Azura's BJD Prompts #8.5: New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year! For some of us we're still in 2013, but in many parts of the world its now the new year. So, what is your new years doll resolution? Is it to buy more dolls? Put a hold on dolls until you finish the ones you have? Or maybe its to get that grail doll.

Tell us in the comment section! Can't wait to hear it!

Azura's BJD Prompts #8: Touching

People love to touch our lovely dolls. Even when we may not exactly want them to. Do you mind if people touch your dolls? What do you do about unwanted touching?

Azura's BJD Prompts #4: Doll Boxes

What do you do with your doll boxes? Do you use them as storage, hide them away, or throw them out? If you use them as storage what do you put in them? If you hide them, where do you hide them?

Personally I tend to store things in them. Lily's box has a whole bunch of prop erasers and pony's in it Haha, and Seraphina's box is stored under my bed with her pillows and card. I don't really put anything in that box since its so large.

I'm more interested in what you guys do with yours!

Azura's BJD Prompts #3: Doll Cosplay

What are your thoughts on Doll Cosplay? Is it a fun thing to do or do you find it un-creative?

I've seen quite a few Doll cosplays lately and I love them! But I could see how some people could find them not very inspiring since they are made to look like existing characters. I think the amount of effort that goes into a doll cosplay is amazing and I applaud those who have the time and patience to complete them!

But enough about what I think, what do you think? Post your response in the comment section!

Azura's BJD Prompts #2: Holidays

Winter Holidays are upon us, so this prompt is Holiday themed. If you celebrate Christmas (or another gift giving holiday) do you give your Dolls gifts as well? Do you take Holiday pictures of them? Do you Decorate their space?

I probably would if I had the funds at the moment but since I don't I settled for crocheting Seraphina her Holiday sweater.

What I'm most interested in, is what you guys do! Post your response in the comments!

Azura's BJD Prompts #1: Favorite Size

What is your favorite size? 1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 or 70cm? Or is it one that isn't listed? Why is it your favorite?

For me I'm still waiting on a 1/12 and a 1/3 to arrive, so I haven't really played with these sizes much. I've seen both sizes and 1/12 is just so tiny I'm not sure I'd enjoy it much. I'm looking really forward to playing with my 1/3, though I've heard they can be a real handfull (get it? haha... I'm not funny I know sorry)

So far 1/4 is my favorite, she's large enough to feel substantial in my hands, yet small enough to not be awkward while posing. (well as unawkward as she can be with me posing her that is)

So now I'd like to hear from you guys. Post your response in the comment section! Or, if you'd rather repost this prompt on your own blog or other platform comment with a link!

BJD Addict Prompt #27: Hiding

Do you hide things in your doll's head or body?

O.O no..no I do not. I probably would if I had something that I needed to hide that would fit that I didn't have a better hiding place for, but I don't know that it would really be the best place to hide stuff...

How about you guys?

BJD Addict Prompt #26: Pretty vs Poseable!

In this hobby sometimes you have to compromise... When it comes to your dolls, do you go for... Pretty or Poseable?

Oh man...this is hard. I probably go for pretty first and foremost because even if the doll poses like a dream, if it isn't ascetically pleasing I wouldn't enjoy it. I also think it would be easier to help a doll pose better vs. make them prettier, but I really love the look of good jointing systems, they're beautiful all on their own!

So all though I'd love to have the best of both worlds, I think I'd rather my dolls be pretty (or simply look like the character I have in mind) than be perfect posers.

How about you guys?

BJD Addict Prompt #25: Style!

Your doll's "style"!
Uhh....well...Seraphina is semi fashionable and enjoys wearing loose skirts and leggings with tee-shirts and fairly large poofy dresses. Lily likes to wear cute things! I'm not sure what Yanji's style is going to be yet, I'm still trying to figure him out! And fox I think will probably stay naked for the most part.

BJD Addict Prompt #24: Public

Do you bring your dolls out with you? If so where?

Well I've taken Seraphina for short outings in the back yard, and I've taken both her and Lily to a meet up with the local bjd group, but there aren't very many places for interesting photographs around where I live. I probably would bring one of them with me somewhere if I was nervous, or if I knew there were going to be other people with dolls where I was going, or if I knew there would be a great photo op!

How about you guys?

BJD Addict Prompt #23: Favorite Eyes

What are your favorite type of eyes? Glass? Acrylic? Urethane?

Well to be honest I have no idea. I really like Glass eyes, and I think I like them just a bit better than Acrylic, but I've never had any Urethane (and I don't think I've actually seen a pair in person).

My favorite place to buy eyes is Ersa Flora, she's really nice and her eyes are beatufiul!

How about you guys?

BJD Addict Prompt #22: Friends with Dolls

Do you have any friends with BJDs, and have you managed to convert anyone?

I haven't converted anyone so far, but I do have friends with BJDs. My best and closest friend Alisha is the person who got me my first doll (so she converted me!) I also met some friends at my local doll meet, so really its because of BJDs that I met the wonderful people!

BJD Addict Prompt #21: Skintones

Do you own dolls with different skintones?

Seraphina is Normal Pink skin and Lily is white skin...but other than that no not as of yet. I do plan on getting at least one tan doll (probably several over the years, I really like that resin color) and one green doll as well.

How about you guys?

BJD Addict Prompt #20: Selling Dolls

Would you ever sell one of your dolls?

There is only one doll I would never ever sell and thats my Dollzone Rosemary. She was given to me by a very close friend, and she is also my very first doll. She's the one doll I could never get rid of. The others will probably come and go, I love Lily, if I thought selling her would help me achieve something I wanted more (assuming I could find a buyer) I probably would sell her. The same thinking applies to the other two dolls that are coming in. They aren't my 'grail' dolls, I liked their sculpts and wanted the size and thats really all that was behind the purchase, but they aren't ones that I can't see myself ever selling.

But my DZ Rosemary is different, she's special and will stay with me always.

BJD Addict Prompt #19: Playtime

How do you play with your BJDs?

Well I play with Seraphina and Lily in a few ways! I will often take them outside, or in the house and take a few pictures of them, or I'll make clothes for them to try on. I enjoy just seeing what kind of poses they can be put into as well and often times its quite silly. I find making them things to wear or use just as much fun as actually playing with them and putting them places to take photos!

As it is I don't typically sit down and play pretend with them, or make up stories around them (Seraphina actually is a character from a novel I've written, but the story didn't come from her if that makes sense) Most of the time I'm content to have them on my doll shelf posed nicely where I can see them every day.

How about you guys? Also, do you have any suggestions for other ways to play?

BJD Addict Prompt #18: BJD Tattoos

Does your BJD have tattoos? Are you looking into getting some for your BJD? What would they be?

Oh gosh I love BJD tattoos! But no, sadly none of my dolls have tattoo's and I don't plan on getting any in the near future. Maybe Yanji will have some when he finally arrives but as it is I see them as a bit too much trouble.

BJD Addict Prompt #17: Unfortunate Buys

Have you ever ordered something and it either didn't fit or wasn't what you expected?

YES! I have gone through this with Lily's clothes (my Doll Leaves Fay) I bought several of the wrong size and well...it sucks but what can you do?

BJD Addict Prompt #15: How many do you own?

How many BJDs do you own? 1? 2? 5? A whole city!?

So far I own two and I have two more on the way. I have a DollZone Rosemary and a Doll Leaves Fay and I love them both! On the way I have a Doll Family A Yanji and a Doll Family A Fox. I can't hardly wait for those ones!

How about you guys?

BJD Addict Prompt #4: Favorite Brand/Store

What is your favorite place to buy BJDs? Is it a certain brand's website? Or is it a retailer like Denver Doll Emporium?

I absolutely love Mint on Card, so far they're the only people I've really ordered from and they've always been very friendly and prompt with any questions or concerns I have. Besides their customer service they have a lovely website thats easy to navigate. I can't tell you how much Junky Spot and Denver Doll Emporium's site design alone put me off.

But thats a retailer, as far as a brand's website I really have no idea. I haven't placed an order with any of them and from what I've noticed a lot of then have very awkward forum like customer service situations instead of private email and answer ones.

BJD Addict Prompt #3: Fantasy Dolls

What fantasy creature would you like to see as a BJD?

This is a great question, and its difficult to narrow the answer down to just one. There are so many different creatures I would love to see. I think a list might be in order:
  • Elemental's (Especially fire elementals) would be super awesome.
  • Griffins
  • Wraiths
  • Ents

There are tons more I could list but I think I'll stop with these. I think the one I'd most like to see would be an elemental or an ent! Of course then there are ones that I've seen as BJD's already that I absolutely adore, such as mermaids, dragons and humanoid flowers.

How about you guys? Comment with what you'd like to see.

BJD Addict Prompt #2: Dream Dolls

If money was not an issue what would be your dream doll and why?

This is a good question, and a very hard question for me to answer. I feel like my 'grail doll' changes every other day and the one I'm pining after right now is the Kid Delf YUL SATYRESSE ver. - MOONLIT SONG Limited from Luts.
She's a dream mostly because she matches my character Malia to a T, she's so perfect for her I can't even begin to explain. She's in the Nano novel I'm writing right now as well, and is Seraphina's best friend.

Other than her its very hard to say who's my dream doll, maybe a Fairyland Feeple Roke, or a Minifee Rheia.

BJD Addict Prompt 1: The Wait

Prompt 1: The Wait

What do I do during the wait to make it pass more quickly?

Well I've only really waited on one doll, Seraphina, My Dollzone Rosemary. My other doll Lily, A Doll Leaves Fay was in stock and shipped to me as soon as I ordered it. So I don't have much experience with The Wait yet. I can tell you the things that I plan to do when I order my next doll, which will most certainly be a waiting game for me.

  • I look up clothes and props that I'd like to buy for them first, and buy them over the coarse of the wait if I can (If not I'll buy them when the doll eventually finally makes it to me).
  • I Look up faceup artists, find the one who will have the style that I want for my doll once they arrive, and start to save up money to send them to them. When the doll finally ships I'll likely apply for a slot with the artist then.
  • I think of photo's I'd like to take, and how I want to have the doll placed in my room when I'm not playing with her.
  • Then I try to put the doll out of my mind, sort of try to forget I ordered them at all. Otherwise I fear the wait will become unbearable, Seraphina's was very difficult for me, and I may be unable to stay sane.
  • Once shipping notice has been given I'm sure all of this careful preparation and planning will all go down the drain and I will, in fact, check the tracking number every hour on the hour for the next however long it takes for the doll to get to me. I wish I were kidding, but I'm not.
So that is what I believe I would do on the wait, what I've done in the past and what I plan to do in the future!

BJD Addicts Prompts

I'm going to start posting written responses to these on here, So if you'd like to know, give it a read!

NaNo Update

I've been slack on updating this blog lately due to Nano and the intense strain its putting on my brain. I didn't realize it at first, but this is mentally exhausting! Combined with all that I usually do it has been putting me in bed earlier than I've gone to bed in a very long time.

So to recap where I am, what has happened and what continues to happen. We have now reached the half way point of NaNoWriMo, We have reached the peak and are on our way back down the metaphorical mountain. Yes! As much as I'm loving NaNo, I couldn't be happier that it's halfway over.

One of the things I've decided is to shoot passed the 50k goal, and instead aim for 70k! Its not much of an over achievement but to me, a first time NaNo participant, it was a very difficult decision, and yesterday I hit my halfway mark at 35k! I'm right on track. What I have noticed, however, is that I have a lot more words to write, and not much novel left! I've nearly completed the second arc and am at least two/thirds of the way to the finish line!

I have a feeling first edit will come sooner than expected, and scenes will be beefed up in places so that I can meet my mark. I've become much more detailed over the past few chapters than I was when I first began, and I think it shows my growth as a writer, and the ever increasing strain on meeting word count while still inching forward in my plot.

That's it for now! I'll post more updates periodically during Nano, and I should be updating much more as soon as it is over.

Word Count Milestole

I've reached 20k which I feel is a mile stone. I have never even imagined writing this much, and I'm so proud of myself right now I can't believe it. I know I'm only 40% done; but 40% is a lot. 20,000 words is a lot. I've never gone over twenty pages typed, and this is well over that.

Thats all I have to say about it today, My next milestone isn't too far away, at 25k, then I will be halfway there and I feel like that is a HUGE one.

Word count, End of Day 7

I made it my goal to reach 15,000 words today and I met that. I'm more than pleased with myself at reaching 15,126 today.

That means I'm 3460 words ahead of schedule, which is right around two days of writing. I've been trying to do a little more than par every day so that should something happen and I'm not able to write at all for one or even two days this month, then I'll still meet my goal without having to play catch up. I figure playing catch up now when I'm still fresh and just starting the race is better than trying to drag my feet through it in week 4.

I feel like if I made 15,000 this week, and do it again next week I'll be at 30,000. Then week 3 it will be 45,000 and I'll only need 5,000 words on week four.

Aside from word count I'm in the middle of chapter 6!

I feel the need to put my percentage completed as a sign off for this post.

It is exactly 30% completed. Woo! (5% ahead of schedule)

Four Things NaNoWriMo Taught Me In Week One

I thought I'd make a post about what the first week of NaNoWriMo has taught me. I feel I've learned a lot already and if I didn't want to win so badly, have my novel written, I could walk away now and feel like I've achieved something important.

  1. Outline's are Priceless: Outlining my story made me realize I didn't have a substantial plot, at least not one that would carry me across 50,000 words. I will always write an outline from this point forward, the more detail I can put in (without turning it into wordy paragraph's which I have been guilty of before) the more I can write on that bullet point when the time comes to churn those words out. The end result becomes longer and more well thought out.
  2. No Look Back: I cannot stress how hard this part is for me, or was for me before this week. I'm dyslexic and have real trouble spelling words and forming sentences in ways that other people can understand them. Even this post I'll likely have to edit a few times to get the word usage just right. With Nano there is no time to second guess sentence structure. No time to worry about whether that is the correct way to spell a word. No time to worry about semicolons. No time to worry about whether it makes sense! Just write and keep pushing forward. It's hard, really hard, but once you get it, you really fly through the words; suddenly able to write hundreds in the span of time it took you to write fifty before.
  3. What's Inspiration?: I hear people going on about " I don't have the inspiration to write today." "I need to be inspired to write." and I used to be one of those people! I would get hit with a sudden dose of inspiration and write a few pages in a frenzy of  "I have to put this idea down right now.", put my work down, and never look at it again. What I should have been doing is using that inspiration to create entire outlines for novels. Don't waste your inspiration on your word count! Put it into your outline and you can push through the tedium of the pages that follow. I didn't think I could do it at first, but now that I've begun to just push through and force myself to write the slow points where I'm not sure how to transition. What's final editing for anyway, right?
  4. Deadlines Are Awesome: The deadline is what is keeping me sprinting! I want to finish! I want to have the pleasure of knowing I've won NaNoWriMo. Me, the dyslexic girl that everyone said would never write anything of value. Having that deadline keeps me from saying "I'll just write it later its cool.". I'll never write it later, I have good intentions but lets face it, that "write it later" thing never works out for me.

A short (not really) update on what's been going on.

I haven't been posting much the past week due to the start of NaNoWriMo. I'm doing really well so far, but it doesn't leave much time for blogging I'm afraid. I've finished five chapters so far, totaling at a little over 12k words in the draft. This is by far the longest I have ever written and keeping on track every day is difficult. Thankfully with the push of friends, and small pushes from family to get my writing done every day I think I should be able to finish this marathon.

After a small bit of math I'm 24% finished with the word count, and by that means I'm on track for the end of week one, needing only 360 words to make 25%. I of course won't stop with only 360 words today, I feel that if I want to finish this thing I should do my best to get ahead while I can and plan on meeting, if not exceeding the 1,667 daily word goal.

As far as outlined chapters go I'm 33% there, meaning I may need to back track sometime in the future and add more words as I go along, but being as some chapters are bound to be longer than others I'm not exceptionally worried.

I also have a plan for after I finish Nano this year. I don't want to fully commit to the plan just yet, because I need to actually win Nano for it to work.

Here's what I'm planning on doing. I want to finish Nano, take about a week off of writing completely, no revision, no looking at my novel, no thinking about the next one. None of that. Maybe read a book over the next week, or get caught up on projects I will have procrastinated on during this marathon of a writing event. (On that note I will most definitely work on the items people won in my giveaway that ended on Halloween. It would be a great chance to get that done, as well as list some items in my shop.)

After my week of rest and recuperation from writing, which I'm sure will be much needed, I will begin writing another novel, hopefully finishing it on the same timeline as I did my Nano novel. By this time I will have two unedited novels and will be in need of rest once more. After another week of rest I'll pick up my Nano novel and begin to edit it. It should be out of my mind as much as it could possibly be by then, with the new novel being in my head so thoroughly.

After my first edit of the Nano novel, I'll edit the second. And then begin the editing process again. I plan on personally editing both novels three times in total and then looking for people to go over them once (or even twice) more before sending them to several publishing houses.

By this time it will no longer be a Nano novel in my mind, as the Nano novel is an unedited word dump of a book, and this will be a fully edited creation, and in my mind a masterpiece (or at least as close to one as I can achieve right now.)

I have a dream of becoming traditionally published, but of course if all else fails and I'm rejected at every turn I'll self publish in the end. Just having the fully edited manuscripts bound and in book form would give me more pride, and sense of accomplishment than I believe I ever have felt before.

At this time I'll take the rest of the time off writing and merely brainstorm my next until Nano starts again. Hopefully a little more prepared this time, a little bit better of an outline, characters more fleshed out before beginning. A clear picture of plot more than three days before the beginning of writing.

I also hope to be a liaison next year. My home region is without any liaison at all and I find this troubling. We won't have any official goodies and that upsets me, and I fear it may throw people off from wanting to attempt this fun, yet exhausting, exercise.

I believe I'm finished rambling for now, Stay tuned for more ramblings in the future. Hopefully I'll update this blog more than once a week.

Halloween Set

I've been working on this Halloween set for a little over a week and I finally finished it! I'm really excited that it turned out so well :D
The leg warmers took two shots to get the pattern right, but now they're fantastic and will bunch up like real leg warmers if you try. The fat bag can actually hold things and the curly scarf stays on really well because the curls lock up with each other.
The hat took two tries because the first one was much much too small, this one barely fits but it does the job. I really hope I'm able to attend the Halloween meet up so I can bring her to show everyone.

I think I'll make other versions of this set, maybe some other Holiday colors as well as some every day fall tones. I was thinking of selling the pattern to the leg warmers, but I'm not 100% sure it would be a good idea, or if anyone would even be interested so I'll wait and see.

Characters

Inspiration hit me just now and I wanted to take it down while I have the opportunity. We all know inspiration comes at a premium during NaNo.

I have no idea if these two will fit into the story, but if they can they will be added somewhere.

A young wizard who wears a suit, with arcane symbols sewn on the inside, which dampens any oncoming spells. He works as an adviser or lawyer (perhaps serves the queen?)

He has a wife, or perhaps a girlfriend who wears hoodies and frilly dresses and is as feminine as it gets. She is a fortune teller/witch and wears her runes and wards in the form of rings, necklaces, bracelets, ear rings and other piercings.

Possible ideas are characters needing advice from a renowned fortune teller, they find the wife.
Characters may need advice and ask the husband

I just wanted to get them down. I'll flesh them out a bit more later, give them names and personalities and hopefully they'll make an appearance in the novel.

Snood

I made this really comfortable (and warm!) snood a while back and its only just now warm enough to wear it. I'm really happy to be able to wear it out finally. This is the only crochet project I've made specifically for myself so far and I absolutely love it. I listed it on etsy so that if anyone else wants one for winter they can buy one and I'll make them one as well. I normally list other colors along with the ones pictured but this time I really couldn't. The yarn I used for this (although very soft and exceptionally snuggly) only comes in a couple of different colors, and it would be quite the task to try to come up with different combinations for people.
If you'd like one click here!

Map of The World Of The Fae

So I worked really hard on this map, I don't know if you can tell... but I do still need to add a few things, such as the names of mountain ranges, forests, rivers and lakes as well as minor outlying islands. For now though I think it is a fantastic start to the world, and it helps me picture it better over all.
Now that I have at least this basic map I can move on to other things in my planning stages for NaNoWriMo and I'm really excited to continue going forward with everything.

We're going to pick up my daughters Halloween costumes today. Hopefully they'll be super cute!

NaNoWriMo Stuff

I may end up posting a map of the world Seraphina's story will take place in, the working title of the book is going to be "Tome of the Fae" but I keep just going back to Seraphina's story for some reason haha...

Right so a map should be coming soon. I might type up a few character bio's and put them here as well, its better not to rely souly on a hard drive for all of your materials anyways yes?

So stuff I'll likely post that has to do with NaNoWriMo:

  • Detailed Map of at least the lands ruled by the Fae
  • Character Bio for Seraphina
  • Character Bio for Melia
  • Character Bio for High Queen Rhiannon
  • Character Bio for Fintan
  • Any ideas that pop into my head, I'll try to keep them down to one or two sentences at a time.
I will be doing a bit more work on the Halloween set I've decided to make for Seraphina (My Dollzone Rosemary) So Far I have a crochet pumpkin purse and a orange and black scarf already completed.

I made a hat, but it will need to be made again, the original try ended up a bit too small. I plan on making some orange and black leggings to go with it; and I also plan on sewing a dress that will compliment everything, but so far that hasn't worked out very well at all.

On top of this I have to continue my planning for National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo! I want to get as many ideas and spark of inspiration written down as I can before November begins so that, when the marathon begins, I won't have to struggle as much to pull words out of my mind. I'm very excited to start this because I have been wanting to write Seraphina's story for over two years, but it has always been a "one day I will sit down and write it" thing. Now that I'll be doing NaNoWriMo I'll have the motivation I need to actually get her story written. Once I have the meat of her story down from NaNoWriMo I plan on going through several edits, having a friend edit, and then a trusted member of my family who enjoys literature to edit as well. I then would like to send it to several publishing houses, if it is rejected I may self publish and sell it on Amazon for a few dollars a download (a bit more for actual paperback copies). Regardless of how it happens I would like to become a published author.

Then I also would like to put a few adverts on Tumblr and possibly here as well for Avon and my Etsy store, advertising is very important for getting sales, which of course I need to survive...

And of COURSE I need to play some more pokemon, because who doesn't? I have a goal of always having every pokemon in my team at full affection, so that takes a lot of my time in the game. Plus the drive to be fashionable is ever present in this game, and I enjoy that very much. This is the most I've enjoyed a pokemon game in several years (since I believe crystal version) I think it has to do with all of the new features, Pokemon Ami and the options to dress your trainer at the forefront of my mind. I'll likely write a full review when I finish the game.

I'd like to start writing game reviews as I play them, but I've always been a little stand offish to put my opinion out there. Games I have right now are Pokemon X, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, Animal Crossing: A New Leaf, Pokemon Black2, and Legend of Zelda: The Phanton Hourglass for the DS/3DS. I also have Dragon Age: Origins and Oblivion for Xbox but I doubt anyone would like reviews for such old games.

I may also put a donation button on this blog in the future so that, if you would like to see more reviews, or more stories/novels by me, You can help by funding me.

I plan on adding polls when I go to do more crochet projects so that, the people who read this blog, or followers from my tumblr who would like to come here to vote, can do so and you can help shape what my next project will be.

In conclusion these are my plans for the near future, some more long term than others.

Just got this beauty in the mail yesterday. And just had time today to play around with her. Still undecided on her name. Kinda like Kennedy.

I love Minifee Rheia, and Cube_BJD did a really good job photographing her

This is one of my favorites that I took recently. Her new faceup is so pretty and suits her perfectly.

First Post

I have a tumblr account that I normally blog on, but I thought I'd make an attempt at reaching another audience!

I sell doll wigs and crochet goods in my Etsy Store as well as Avon!
I have a Tumblr account as well as a Twitter ( @DoliAzura), Flickr (DoliAzura), and Facebook!

Since this is my first post I'll just leave this as my info dump haha.
I hope anyone who likes Ball jointed dolls, Makeup, and Fashion will enjoy this blog, I will always try to source any new content that I personally did not create, and if you see your work on this blog, and you do not want it to be featured, please send me an email and I will remove it immediately!

Hope you enjoy!
Talk to you guys very soon.
